Poker World mourns Lou Krieger’s passing

Last week Lou Krieger, famed poker author/columnist and teacher, died after a six-month battle with cancer of the esophagus. He died in his sleep at his home in Palm Springs, Calif.
The Poker World mourns his passing. We honor him for his outstanding contributions to the game. He was a true pioneer.
Krieger was born 67 years ago in Brooklyn, N.Y. where, at age 7, he first learned the game of poker while watching his father and cronies playing at the kitchen table. An outstanding athlete in high school, Lou enjoyed competition both in sports and at the poker table.
As a young man, after a visit to Las Vegas, he decided to learn to play winning Texas Hold’em.
“I didn’t like Las Vegas at first,” he said. “Blackjack was boring, and I knew the odds were against the players shooting dice or playing any of the other table games. Then I discovered a poker table tucked into a small corner of the Desert Inn where we were staying.”
In the early 90s, Krieger began writing for CardPlayer magazine where he authored hundreds of strategy articles. From 2007 until May 2012, he held the position of Editor for Poker Player Newspaper. He continued to write a regular column for the publication, with his last article, part 2 of a three-part series on “Implied Odds and Reverse Implied Odds – Go Figure,” published posthumous in the Dec. 17 issue. (I was looking forward to the rest of the series.)
Krieger has written for almost every significant poker publication. In addition to Poker Player Newspaper and CardPlayer, his columns have been published in Bluff, Poker Pro, Midwest Travel and Gaming, Gambling Times, Casino Player, Woman Poker Player, Fifth Street, and Canadian Poker Player.
His first book, Hold’em Excellence: From Beginner to Winner, was published in 1995, and is still among his most memorable. Its sequel, More Hold’em Excellence, was published in 1999, both by Conjelco. In all, he wrote 11 popular poker books, including the best-selling Poker for Dummies.
In 2000, Casino Journal magazine named Krieger one of the most influential gaming writers of the past 100 years.
In addition to his extensive writings about the game of poker, he also hosted “Keep Flopping Aces,” a weekly poker podcast show on Rounders Radio. Krieger also served as online host for Royal Vegas Poker and for the College Poker Championships. He also had a leading role in the British reality-poker television show, Vegas Virgins.
In response to the announcement of Krieger’s death, OK-Johnny Hale, Grand Marshall of the Seniors World Championship of Poker, announced that Krieger had been named to the Seniors World Championship of Poker Hall of Fame. “I was honored to call Lou my friend,” said Hale, one of the pioneer poker writers for Gaming Today.
Personally, I found Krieger to be a wonderful human being, a credit to our Poker World. For example, two years ago, when we asked him to present a poker seminar to our Claude Pepper Seniors Poker Group, he graciously accepted. Lou drove from Palm Springs to a Los Angeles area casino where he made a superb information-packed Power-Point presentation our members will long remember.
Other works include the best-selling introductory book Poker for Dummies and his most recent Secrets the Pros Won’t Tell You About Winning Hold’em Poker, co-authored with Sheree Bykofsky.
Along with his writing works, he also hosted his own weekly poker podcast show on Rounders Radio, named “Keep Flopping Aces” with fellow poker author Shari Geller.
A memorial service will be held in the coming months, and updates will be made on his public facebook page. The family requests condolences be sent to PO Box 1441, Palm Springs, CA 92263-1441, or messages left on his facebook wall.
