Except for immediately after Hurricane Katrina, Coast casinos reported the lowest January winnings since 1999. The good news is the total was only $1.4 million lower than January 2013.
Although that typically isn’t positive news, it is less than the $4.7 million decline in December compared with the prior year.
The 12 Coast casinos had gross casino revenue of $81.4 million in January, down from $82.9 million, or 2 percent, from a year ago.
Thursday’s report from the Mississippi Department of Revenue shows winnings at the river casinos were $78.1 million in January, up from $77.7 million in January 2013.
Until recently, the river casinos’ winnings were higher than the total for the Coast. Competition from neighboring states changed that and for the past seven months, the Coast casinos have posted higher gross revenue.
